Event details

Contemporary art exhibition organized by UNHCR and co-curated by Luca Berta and Francesca Giubilei.

The project was born from the desire to propose an alternative narrative to the prevailing one, in which refugees are considered not as a mass, or a depersonalized burden, but in their full potential as unique individuals, bearers of enrichment for society as a whole.
Rothko in Lampedusa was also born thanks to the support of the UniCredit Group, proud to be the main sponsor of this initiative which is a great example of how to use art for higher purposes and as a stimulus for an innovative dialogue on a social issue of great importance. Culture is undoubtedly a powerful driver for the sustainable development of our communities and UniCredit has a long tradition of supporting it through notable partnerships and specific initiatives that promote social and economic growth and stimulate dialogue on innovation to foster social inclusion, greater cohesion and common social well-being.

The title Rothko in Lampedusa alludes to the ideal bond between one of the greatest artists of the 20th century and the media anonymous mass who, fleeing from conflicts and persecution, reaches our shores in Lampedusa.

They will present their works in dialogue with those of 8 internationally established artists: Ai Weiwei, Adel Abdessemed, Christian Boltanski, Nalini Malani, Abu Bakkar Mansaray, Richard Mosse, Dinh Q. Le, Artur Zmijewski.
Their works will dialogue with those of five emerging refugee artists. In addition to presenting their works, Majid Adin (animator, Iran, refugee in England), Rasha Deeb (sculptor, Syria, refugee in Germany), Hassan Yare (cartoonist, Somalia, refugee in Kenya), Mohamed Keita (photographer, Costa 'Avorio, refugee in Italy) and Bnar Sardar Sidiq (photographer, Iraq, refugee in England) will be in Venice from 28 April to 23 May to participate in an artistic residency, organized in collaboration with the Waterlines project, promoted by the International College of Ca' Foscari University, the Venice Foundation and San Servolo srl, which will offer them the opportunity to come into contact with the international artistic scene and start a network of relationships useful for their careers.
