Seminar for PhDs with musicological disciplines

The Levi Foundation is organizing a seminar, within the Third Giovanni Morelli Festival, for PhD students on the theme of 'The Coronation of Poppea by Claudio Monteverdi and its performance and staging today'.
The sources, editions, and modern performances and stagings will be examined and correlated, focusing in particular on the individual characters of the opera and the cuts made.
Venetian music of the seventeenth century was one of the many musicological fields in which Giovanni Morelli distinguished himself, indeed, one of the first in which he published material of imperishable value. The seminar, followed by a conference and a concert-celebration, brings together two aspects of studies that Morelli found inexorably united, namely the library and the concert hall, the text and the music, musicology and performance. Two ways of knowing a work: by reading and listening (and seeing).

To the general preparation, which will be carried out in 5 online meetings one per month between December 2024 and April 2025, followed by lectures with Mauro Calcagno (University of Pennsylvania) and Ellen Rosand (Emerita, Yale University).

Le lessons in presence will be held from the afternoon of May 11 to the morning of May 13, 2025, in Venice, at the headquarters of the Ugo and Olga Levi Foundation and the 'Benedetto Marcello' Conservatory of Venice. Following the convention, attendance of which is mandatory, which is held from the afternoon of May 13th to the evening of May 14th 2025 (concert) and the return of the work the May 15th morning. All activities are conducted in Italian.
