Event details

An affinity relationship binds Giovanni Morelli to Luigi Nono. The musicologist teaching at Ca' Foscari lived in the same streets as the Venetian composer, following his creative parable and interpreting his legacy of sounds and ideals (just remember the Portrait of Luigi Nono of 1995, in which the most daring expository imagination combines with the rigor of historiographical investigation, or the essays dedicated to symbolic works of the 'late style', such as The breathing clarity e Prometheus). Although crucial, Morelli's contribution still remains in the shadows, awaiting an examination that reveals its premises and intuitions.
On the centenary of Nono's birth, this conference attempts for the first time a comparison - or rather, a meeting of glances - between the figure of the musician and that of the scholar, making use of some ideas developed by a research group that for two years questions himself about Morell's themes (for more information: https://www.fondazionelevi.it/ricerca/il-novecento-di-giovanni-morelli-prove-di-esegesi-sugli-scritti/). The competition of speakers from outside the group will only enrich the opportunities for debate, in a journey that explores various aspects of the 'Nono-Morelli' dyad: the hypothesis of a Venetian school, descending from the lesson of Gian Francesco Malipiero; the genre of portraiture as an escape from the academicism of musicological discourse; the analysis of the works in light of archival sources; and finally the poetics of distance, which also becomes the possibility of grasping intersections between compositional languages, echoes of the twentieth-century past in today's music.
