Centers and Peripheries of Lauda in the Fifteenth Century: Venice and Friuli

The fifteenth century marked the extraordinary flowering of the lauda in the Veneto region. In line with the renewal of religious sensibility of the time, the laud genre was cultivated by both elite as well as by lay brotherhoods and the clergy, both in Venice and in the dominions of Terraferma and da Mar, as amply demonstrated by the fundamental studies of Giulio Cattin. Manuscript testimonies such as the Venetian laudary Marciano Ital. IX 145 illustrate the processes of reception and re-elaboration of previous Central Italian laud experiences, but also the infusion of new spiritual, poetic and musical life. The formal and content-related innovations developed in Veneto often pass under the authoritative name of Leonardo Giustinian (1388-1446), but far from the capital, for example in Friuli, the features of the fourteenth-century lauda can still be traced at the end of the century thanks to the institutional continuity of the Battuti companies, to which the Pordenone laud writer and humanist Pietro Edo (1426-1504) also belonged.

The meetings entitled Centers and Peripheries of Lauda in the Fifteenth Century: Venice and Friuli The conference is a synergy between the Levi Foundation, the ERC AdG LAUDARE project – University of Trento, and the San Marco Academy of Pordenone. The aim is to identify the elements of resolution and continuity between the major and minor centers of laud production and its geographical and social boundaries. The conference will be divided into three sessions, dedicated to rereading and highlighting Giulio Cattin's contribution to laud studies, the figure of Pietro Edo (in ideal continuity with the results of the study conference). Language, literature, and music between Veneto and Friuli at the time of Pietro Edo, held in Pordenone on 7-9 May 2026), and to the material and musicological analysis of the Marciana Ital. IX 145 collection.
